Craft Time:  ~1 hour

Assemble the Birds

  1. Prepare the glue bottle: Open the lid and remove the small stopper from the bottle. Screw the valve cap back on securely.
  2. Remove all bird pieces from the bag labeled Bird 1.
  3. Sort the cutouts by shape. You should have two of each shape.
  4. Set aside the two backer pieces (partial bird outlines with two small vertical pre-cut openings at the top).
  5. Begin with the bird base piece (full bird silhouette).
  6. Layer the matching pieces on top of the base, aligning the edges as you go.
  7. Glue each piece in place to build your finished bird.
  8. Repeat these steps to assemble the second bird using the remaining matching pieces.

See diagram below for assembly reference.

Attach the Backer Pieces

  1. Find the two backer pieces you set aside earlier.

  2. Take one bird and turn it face down on a flat surface. You’ll notice that the bird backer piece matches a portion of the bird’s silhouette. This backer piece is what you’ll use to attach the bird to the twine when assembling the garland.

  3. Notice the two small vertical cuts on the backer piece (top of the head and wing). Apply a few small drops of glue to the lower section only of the backer, near the bottom edge.
Important: Do not apply glue near the two cuts. These openings must remain clear so the birds can be attached to the twine later.

  4. Align the backer piece with the outline of the bird and press it gently into place. The backer is slightly smaller than the bird so it stays hidden when the garland is assembled.

  5. Repeat above steps using the contents of the bag labeled Bird 2.

Assemble the Flowers

  1. Remove all flower pieces from both bags.

  2. Sort the pieces by color and shape. You should have enough pieces to make three Grapefruit-colored flowers and two Ivory-colored flowers. Each flower uses two petal layers and two leaves.

  3. Set aside the five backer pieces (Eucalyptus-colored silhouette pieces with two vertical pre-cut openings at the top).

  4. Using the bone folder, gently curl all flower petals and the tips of the leaves to add dimension. You may also curl the leaves on the backer piece if you’d like.

  5. To assemble a flower, layer two matching petal pieces of the same color, slightly staggering the petals. Add a small dot of glue to the center and press gently to secure.

  6. Glue one green starburst-shaped piece into the center of the flower.

  7. Peel off an enamel flower center and stick it to the middle of the starburst.

  8. Flip the flower over and use glue to attach two green leaves, positioning them so they peek out and are visible from the front. Press gently to secure.

 Attach the Backer Pieces

  1. Locate the flower backer pieces (Eucalyptus-colored silhouette pieces with two vertical pre-cut openings at the top).

  2. Notice the two small vertical cuts at the top of the circular section. Apply a few small drops of glue to the bottom edge of the circular section only.
Important: Do not apply glue near the two small cuts at the top of the backer pieces. These openings must remain clear so the flowers can be attached to the twine later.

  3. Center the flower on the backer piece and press the two pieces together, keeping glue away from the slits on the backer piece.

See diagram below for assembly reference.

Assemble Garland

  1. Prepare the twine: Remove the twine from the belly band. Measure 6 inches, fold that section in half, and tie a knot to make a hanging loop.

  2. Thread the needle: Thread the opposite end of the twine through the needle.

Tip:  Fold a small strip of paper around the twine and use that to guide it through the needle’s eye.

Refer to this diagram as you assemble your garland:

  3. Add a pom pom: Using the needle, thread the twine through the center of a pom pom.  Be sure the needle passes through the center of the pom pom to stay secure.

  4. Attach a flower: Thread the needle through the two small cuts on the flower backer and pull the twine through. Start with a Grapefruit-colored flower, then alternate between the two flower colors as you assemble the garland.

Tip:  To help the birds and flowers hang correctly (and not tip forward), bring the needle up from the back through one cut, then back down through the second cut to secure them in place.

  1. Thread on another pom pom.

  2. Attach a bird: Thread the needle through the two small cuts on the bird backer and pull the twine through.

    1. Start with one Bird #1, then alternate between the two birds as you assemble the garland.

  3. Thread on another pom pom.

  4. Continue this pattern, leaving about 1 ½ inches of space between each item along the twine.

  5. Finish the garland: Once all the pieces are added, tie a loop at the end of the twine, and trim any extra.

  6. Display: Use the loops on each end to hang your garland.
